Super-Fly Comic of the Week March 7

Another week has passed, fellow Fly-Hards, so that means there must be another Super-Fly Comic of the Week! This week saw several launches from Marvel with Magneto #1 and Wolverine and the X-Men #1, Dark Horse launched Greg Rucka’s Veil #1, and Afterlife with Archie took a very dark turn (which is impressive for that series!) Unfortunately, many comics enter, one comic leaves and this week the comic that took the top prize is: Moon Knight #1!

Moon Knight 1

Warren Ellis (Transmet, Thunderbolts) and Declan Shalvey (Deadpool, 28 Days Later) have brought back Marc Spector for a new series launching a “real” new #1.  Jordie Bellaire also fully deserves to be recognized for some brilliant and beautiful color choices throughout this first issue.  There have been a lot of different versions of Moon Knight over the years with differing reasons for his insanity, but this series seems to want to clean a lot of that up and give us a clear consistent Moon Knight.  There are a few simply brilliant moments here both on the art side and in the dialogue, such as a brilliant splash page of Moon Knight climbing down into a manhole and we see multiple levels of New York City Underground, or when a character questions why Moon Knight wears all white to fight crime at night, his answer is fantastic.  This was a highly anticipated new series and this first issue did not disappoint.

Super-Fly Comic of the Week February 28

We got 99 comics, Fly-Fans, and only one can be this week’s Super-Fly Comic of the Week! There were a lot of excellent issues of monthly favorites this week from series such as Umbral, Manhattan Projects, and The Wake. This week even saw a highly anticipated #1 from Dark Horse with the release of Gail Simone’s Tomb Raider, but ultimately there could be only one. This week’s comic is: My Little Pony Friends Forever #2

MLPFF#2

Jeremy Whitley (Princeless) and Tony Fleecs (My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic) follow up was actually another fun issue last month (that one from Alex de Campi and Carla Speed McNeil), this time with a very entertaining story dealing with fan favorites the Cutie Mark Crusaders and their never ending quest to earn their cutie marks.  When Discord gets involved, you know things are going to get crazy!  Don’t fear that pesky #2 on the cover because this is a true-blue one shot (although if you DO want to read from the beginning we do have #1 in stock!)  Below is a panel from the issue and if it doesn’t sell this comic for you, nothing will.  Fly-Fans, I give you: My Little Pony: The Next Generation.

Super-Fly Comic of the Week February 21

Ahoy Fly-Fans and welcome to another installment of Super-Fly Comic of the Week! This week was a little anemic, but never fear there were still some strong issues out there. Undertow #1 was surprisingly decent, Midas Flesh #3 continued to delight, and Punisher #2 was just as strong as the first issue. While all of those were fun in their own way, none of them stood up to the challenge of this week’s comic is: Red Sonja #7

RedSonja7

Gail Simone (Batgirl, Birds of Prey) and Walter Geovani (Red Sonja) have been crushing it on this book ever since they took over with just the right balance of high fantasy action and comedy. We here at Super-Fly are huge fans of Gail Simone so we were naturally excited when this series was announced and she has not let us down. Issue #7 may seem like an odd one to recommend, but lucky for you this issue begins the second story arc, so if you missed out on #1 and want in now is the time! While the actual plot of this arc does look like it’s going to be a little thin, the characterization and witty banter in this comic push it over the top.
