Not pictured: Jared freaking out after talking to Gail Simone.

On August 30th, Super-Fly Comics and Games celebrated its fourth anniversary as they continue to be one of the most awesome reasons to visit Yellow Springs, Ohio. Store owner Tony Barry and the staff have been kicking it hardcore to the comics crowd since 2007 and oddly enough, their anniversary landed on a very serendipitous moment in comics history. That night, Super-Fly joined comic shops across the country to usher in DC’s New 52 line in a midnight August 31 release. There was quite a crowd attending the shop for the release of Flashpoint #5 and Justice League #1, the end of one DC Universe and the beginning of another, known widely as the DC new Universe or DCnU. As everyone waited for midnight to arrive, cakes of all kinds were served, geek comradery was had, Super-Fly’s awesome stock of merchandise was browsed and excitement built as store manager Jared Whittaker assured everyone that the hype for the DCnU was much deserved and everyone could relax—something he had tweeted to that effect earlier.

Close to midnight, the store got an amazing surprise when Jared got a call from comics writer extraordinaire Gail Simone! It turns out, Gail had re-tweeted Jared’s tweet and then (with some helpful handiwork from former store co-owner Tad Cleveland) wanted to call the shop. We were all floored and the store fell into a nervous hush as Jared talked to Gail. Then, knowing I’m a big fan of hers, he waved me over and put me on the phone, which was a thrill. (Jared, you are the man!) Gail is the writer of the upcoming DC New 52 books Batgirl and is also co-writer (with Ethan Van Sciver) on Fury of Firestorm.

I wish I could say I engaged Gail Simone in a classy, sophisticated way but in the excitement I just got all giddy fanboy. I told her I was a big fan and thanked her for calling the store. She thanked me and told me how excited she was for the launch of the DCnU and that she envied all the fans and retailers who were out doing all the geek things she loved that night with the midnight release, and she had just been thrilled all day. I felt great about how friendly and cool Gail was. After another minute of chatting and telling her how excited I was for Batgirl, (I’m excited for Firestorm too but forgot to mention it.) I put Jared back on, who put on Tony. Tony also thanked Gail for calling and told her how tonight coincided with the shop’s anniversary. Tony also told Gail about the Super-Fly podcast and asked if she would be a future guest on the show. So keep listening to the podcast, as Gail could show up in the future! As Tony and Gail’s conversation drew to a close, it was five minutes to midnight.

Tony took the moment to draw out a bottle of Champagne and told the crowd that the last four years would not be possible without them, thanked them for being part of the comics culture, and toasted to four more years (and hopefully many more!). After popping the cork, adults were offered Champagne, while the younger set bought bottled Cokes. I was first in line to buy Justice League #1 and the line behind me was long, with copies of the standalone print issue quickly selling out, leaving only combo print/digital comics for the remaining folks in line. These were gone by the next business day. Nationwide, orders had sold the book out, with a second printing also being fully sold out in orders and a third printing quickly announced.

As an official “sidekick” of Super-Fly, I have stepped up to write reviews of all 52 books, in as timely a manner as possible. Admittedly, I am a DC fan boy, but a well tempered one. I did not read Brightest Day, or Flashpoint. Additionally, many of the DC books I was getting are now no more (such as Doom Patrol, Freedom Fighters & Secret Six) with other books I follow falling outside the core of the DCU (such as T.H.U.N.D.E.R. Agents and Jonah Hex). I have long since given up on pretty much all Bat, Super, and team books, and a big reason is I can’t afford them as much as I once could. But the DCnU is just so exciting; I want to be on the ground floor for all of it. Thanks to Super-Fly’s awesome pre-order 50% off offer on all 52 books, it’s possible for me to do this. I will get all 52 first issues, and while I hope I can sustain buying 52 comics a month, realistically it will be hard. Therefore, I will really be discriminating in what second issues I pick up and want my purchases to be justified. I want to go into this new DCU with a clean break from the past and an open mind to see what lies ahead. I also really want to help Super-Fly give its fans a head’s up whether a book is worth checking out or not. I’m looking forward to it! And there couldn’t be a better place than Super-Fly to celebrate the new DCnU all throughout September!

For those of you whop don’t follow us on Twitter (shame on you!) or don’t have a Twitter (good for you!), you missed the news that we scored quite the coup yesterday. While taking a day off from touring mc chris put it out there that he wanted to play Red Dead Redemption if any of his fans in the Cincinnati area were going to get a copy. Sure, we’re a little outside that area but we let him know that we had it and would be more than willing to let him come and play it on our 70″ projector. He agreed and we got a chance to watch as he rode and shot his way through Rockstar’s newest masterpiece. Seriously, this game is as great as mc was gracious and genuine. It was a fun time, and hopefully we’ll get a chance to hang out with him again soon (some of us are even going to his show at The Basement in Columbus tonight at 7pm. If you’ve never been to an mc chris show, you are missing out!

This week is our Avengers Day Party, celebrating the release of AVENGERS #1 by Bendis and Romita, Jr. We’ll have Thor Cake, the full array of Avengers variants, Marvel vs Capcom 2 on our aforementioned projector as well as FREE “I am an Avengers” prints for the first 25 folks that show up. We assure you, nothing is healthier for you than cake and video games. Honest.

Also out this week is ZATANNA’s new ongoing from Paul Dini, the LEGION OF SUPER-HEROES returns with the legendary Paul Levitz, the Agents return in ATLAS, Pepper Potts takes center stage in the RESCUE one-shot, and the JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA begins its crossover with the Justice Society as one of the returned heroes from Blackest Night joins the team!

If you’re looking for more Super-Fly info, sign up for our newsletter (on the right) and stay tuned later today for the first episode of the weekly Super-Fly podcast. It’s all the fun of a Super-Fly visit, but with a volume knob. Wait, maybe that’s not the best selling point.

What a week, and it’s only Tuesday! For the rest of this week’s comics, click below!

On that day all the Avengers titles were re-launched with new number ones to show that they were super-serious – and so we’re having a big party to celebrate!” – an issue of Avengers, I think

Or something like that. I’m not good with quotes. Either way, on Wednesday, May 19th the classic Avengers line-up returns in Avengers #1, written by Brian Bendis and art by John Romita, Jr. and we’re celebrating with an Avengers day party! We’ll have Avengers cake, our 360 up and running so we can get our Marvel vs Capcom 2 on, and we’ll also have free prints of the image above available for the first 25 people that show up. Here’s the official press release with our names in the blank spots with more information

“Super-Fly Comics & Games in association with Marvel Comics is pleased to announce the official Marvel Avengers Day Party all day Wednesday, May 19th. Fans of Iron Man, Captain America, Thor and all things Marvel are invited to come in and celebrate the release of the new Avengers series penned by Brian Michael Bendis and illustrated by John Romita Jr. during this all-day event. Guests will have the chance to pick up a FREE exclusive limited edition print featuring Romita Jr.’s “I Am An Avenger” images, plus exclusive Avengers Day party variants of Avengers #1 will be on-sale to celebrate the launch of Avengers #1, a title kicking off a new Heroic Age at Marvel.
“As Marvel ushers in the Heroic Age, we wanted a chance to celebrate with our greatest fans as Avengers #1 signifies a whole new era for the Marvel Universe,” says Marvel Senior Vice President of Sales and Circulation Publishing David Gabriel. “Bendis and Romita Jr. are making Marvel history and we wanted to share in this momentous day with our fans and retail partners.”

Thanks, boilerplate!

Seriously, what better way to make New Comic Day even more fun than cake, video games and free stuff? Nothing allowed by law, I’ll tell you that!

Early reports are that we’ll have as many, if not more, artists then the last show. Our resident DJ, JFX316, is working up a setlist of pretty off the wall music to set the tone. If that’s not enough, word is that he’ll have copies of his new mixtape, “The Halls of Insomnia” FOR FREE!

We’ll be starting at 2pm and going through the day until 7pm. There’s still time, artists. If you’d like to participate, contact us at Superflycomics@Gmail.com and let us know what you are doing and how much space you need. Art lovers, come in and support the artists by buying some of their wares. Music lovers, wonder at the diverse combination of music coming out of the sound system. Comic lovers…we’ll be selling comics. It’s kind of what we do here.

Yet another event from you friendly neighborhood comic store, Super-Fly Comics.

But we here at Super-fly are an ambidextrous bunch. That’s why the week after Free Comic Book day, May 8th, we’ll be hosting our second Live Art Show in store. The first one went over very well and we’re doing it again. Starting at 2pm and going all day, artists will be creating artwork of various styles and genres, all to the eclectic soundtrack of our resident DJ, JFX316. We invite you to come out and enjoy the event, either as an artist, a music fan or just an interested party. If you are interested in participating as an artist, please email us at SuperFlyComics@gmail.com and let us know what type of art you’re planning on doing so we can have an appropriate idea of how much space we need.

Hope we see you soon.

As fans of comics, we here at Super-Fly have a deep appreciation for art in all it’s forms. That’s why we’re proud to announce our next event: The Super Fly Live Art show. At 2pm, April 3rd, we’ll be having a number of local artists of different styles in store, working their artistic magic live before your very eyes. Doing a “live” performance of their artwork, as it were. All to the eclectic soundtrack of DJ JFX316, who will be playing selections from his upcoming EP, My Own Bullet Hell, as well as music from every and any genre you can think of. If that weren’t enough, at 8pm, we turn the store into a mini gallery of sorts and the artists will be showing off their creations from the day in prime time.

We hope that you can make it out for this. It’s looking to be a really fun and interesting time. If you are interested in participating as an artist, email us at SuperFlyComics@Gmail.com More info on the artists participating TBA.

Everybody likes to get down and boogie. That’s just a fact. It’s also a fact that Winter kind of blows, especially these past few weeks. What better way to shake them blahs than to have a party?

Saturday, February 27th at 8pm we’ll have two of Yellow Spring’s finest DJs, JFX316 and Dr. Falafel, spinning tracks well into the evening. We’ll have our expansive sales floor cleared, we’ll have the cardboard down, and we’ll having folks doing their best breakdancing moves.

Think you’ve got moves? Then bring them to the cardboard floor, as we’ll be having a breakdance competition that night as well. We’ll have cash prizes for the top three dancers ($60, $30 and $10 respectively). They’ll be competing first in exhibition rounds, and then the top dancers (judged by our panel of experts) will square off against each other in rounds escalating in time and dance-fury intensity.

Whether you’re a dance-watching enthusiast or a dance-dancing enthusiast we’ll have something for you, powered by the beats of two legendary DJs. There will be no cover, no entry free, and no reason not to come out and have a good time at the Miami Valley’s most happening and exciting comic shop.
